Hi Ray,
Here's the information you may want to pass along to the students about the selection process for the 2007 ENV Career Day Postcard competition.
Judges:
Micah Stevens, Web Developer, Raincross Technologies Mona Hsieh, Academic Advisor, College of Environmental Design Jennifer Rueda, Chair, 2007 ENV Career Day Planning Committee Marcy Ruiz, Project Developent Specialist, College of Environmental Design
In the first round we evaluated: - aesthetic - what caught our eye - how the images would translate into web - how effective - modification - color
In the final round we looked at: - readability, getting information across - legibility, typography - audience, firm's perspective - overall feeling corporate vs spirit clip art vs unique ideas - ingenuity, back of the card was simple yet sophisticated - theme, some had definite theme i.e. "brining students and professionals.....etc." - risk element
The selection process was very difficult because all the entries were outstanding. Please convey our most sincere praise and appreciation to all the students for their effort.
Congratulations to the winner.
And that winner is….
Check back here this evening at 6pm to find out the winner!!!!! |

| Assignment that is part of your Project Grade! |

Art 252
Assignment Critique
Due to our limited time on this project, we are doing a unique critiquing situation – On Line.
As part of your Project Grade, you will need to post the most current and complete images of your 3 modular designs for the ENV Career Day Postcards.
Post them On Line no later than Wednesday at 11:59pm. Make sure they are JPEGs and Not TOO Large!
Then you must, by Saturday at 11:59pm, comment on at least 30 of your classmates work as well as work posted from the other class. Comments MUST BE a constructive sentence and shows you actually looked at and considered the piece. A simple “I Like it” or “Cool One!” or “This Design Sucks” will not cut it. I will be reading them.
Then, in your journal, post of list of all those whom you have commented on. A simple list of the names will suffice. Make sure you do this as this is how you well earn 10 points toward your Project Grade.
This will be our On Line Class for the second half of the week.
Any questions please post here and I will answer here.
The Last week of classes Monday and Tuesday: Working and mini critique in class. Print outs are expected. Working on Project 4 should be underway and can be discussed. Wednesday and Thursday: Project 3 is Due
Finals Week Project 4 is due at the final and Re-do of the Greeting Card if you wish to do that.
And then we’re done! TaDah! |

| And The Winners ARE!.... |
[Nov. 18th, 2006|05:22 pm] |
First let me pass on congratulations to everyone who participated in the ENV Greeting Card competition. Over all the work done was splendid, however one had to be picked as a winner.
Please read this re-cap of the judging, as it will give you insight into what was important. Competition was very tight, but as each new criterion was brought up, cards were eliminated. Once or twice, old cards were brought back into the mix, but they didn’t last.
First the cards were dumped on the table in a pile. The three judges simply started going through them and pulling out ones they liked. It is interesting to note that cards were being stood up on their folds because “that is how cards are displayed at home” one said. This brought up a discussion on how to display cards but that played little into the final judging. What is important to notice is that in a pile of cards the judges were looking for cards that stood out and were eye catching. This was a VERY IMPORTANT first step. Almost half the cards were pushed to the side after that.
Secondly the core message of the card was considered: was it too simple? too basic? too elaborate? too confusing? This is not necessarily eliminate cards but it certainly put them into a hierarchy of Good Better and Best. Ones that were inappropriate were pushed out.
Thirdly the semiotics of the cards imagery was considered. ANYTHING that could remotely be construed as religious was pushed aside: Christmas trees, nativity imagery even colored lights were questioned. Anything that represented social diversity, the ideals of ENV, environmental design education and tools were pushed to the Good pile.
Fourth – I noticed cards that were similar to other cards knocked each other out of the competition.
Fifth – The mechanics of the card became important: did it fit in an envelope nicely or was it too loose? Did the card have an intricate fold that was detrimental to its display or the deans signing? Or was the cut or fold very clever?
This brought us down to about 5 or 6 cards. At this point, I was asked to explain the approach to the cards and the project. I talked about reductive design and it was noticed that the selected cards were good examples of reductive design.
The Top Three Cards were chosen:

These cards were discussed at length: What was noted was how each one spoke to a separate area of ENV – and would that be good or bad? It was finally decided that message sent should be forward thinking and simple. A positive message that was inventive in form. Minor changes would have to happen to any of these cards before publication.
The winner was chosen: Nellie Pham Le.
2nd Place went to James Hsu and his card is being considered for a future use.
3rd Place to Emily – whose piece was the very essence of sophistication but not quite right for the dean.
Prize money for 1st place is $150, 2nd place, $100 and 3rd place is $50
Learn from this and good luck in the next competition. |

| PLEASE READ THIS |
[Oct. 4th, 2006|04:24 pm] |
Ladies and Gentleman - I have been looking at your live journals and I do find some of them quite wonderful. I want you all to realize I WILL NOT CENSOR YOU, however, I want to make sure that you are very very careful with what you are printing and 'saying'. Some images can be misread - and misread FAST. I want to make sure you are not taking potshots at anyone. Although you are anonymous on here, you will be held accountable for what you have printed. This is a project for ANYONE to see - and I would hope that you are mature enough and clever enough to not be blatent in your posts if you are complaining or denegrating. SO this is the WARNING -
Please do not make me regret this assignment.
Thank you Ray |
